Who doesn’t love a holiday?

Happy Memorial Day

By Lyndelle Brower Chiomenti, Editor, CQ Bible Study Guide

Recently, people who live in the United States celebrated Memorial Day. This holiday, occurring on the last Monday of May, honors “all Americans who have died in all wars” and “marks . . . the start of the summer vacation season. . . .”1 People attend parades featuring bands and soldiers. They also put flowers and flags on the graves of women and men who were killed in combat and have picnics at beaches and in lush, green parks. Other events include auto races such as the Indianapolis 500 and golf games such as the Memorial Tournament.

God has given His people a memorial day called the Sabbath. Exodus 20:8‒11 teaches us the purpose of this day and how He wants us to celebrate it: “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it” (NKJV).

In Isaiah 58 we read that the Sabbath is a special day for honoring God and for being of service to our fellow humans. Verse 13 provides “the acid test of what is right and proper on the Sabbath—does it honor God? Any activity entered into with the objective learning more of the character, works, ways, and will of the Creator, or that is made a channel whereby His love may reach the hearts and lives of our fellow men, is indeed an honor to God.”2  Jesus Himself honored the Sabbath in both of these ways (see Matthew 12 and John 5).

Just think of it! America’s Memorial Day comes just once a year. But God’s Memorial Day comes to the entire world once a week! And on that day we get to lay aside the work of the other six days just so we can have 24 uninterrupted hours to spend time with Him and be of service to others.

Who doesn’t love a holiday? We are at CQ hope you love the Sabbath!
